We tried one of the best doughnut spots in Portland | Pip's Original Doughnuts and Chai

We tried three flavors of Pip's Original Doughnuts and ordered a dozen. Now this is my kind of math!

We visited the world's first doughnut and chai shop! Family owned and located in Portland, OR, the lines out the door already indicated it would be good. At Pip's Original, the doughnuts are small, but mighty. They're served warm, and you can choose from five flavors. They also serve Chai, you can even order a flight, and there are five flavors to choose from.

We visited during our Portland overnight and we went on a late Saturday morning. I had heard about the lines, so I was a little nervous and didn't know what to expect when visiting. It was raining, and that made me nervous since I don't like waiting outside in the rain. Luckily for us, we only waited about five minutes until we could go inside. Then we waited in a longer line to order, but at least we were inside. Every table was full, but as we got closer to the counter, a lot of tables opened up.

We ordered a dozen doughnuts. Each one is a couple of bites, so it wasn't a huge amount for the four of us. We got Nutella and Sea Salt, Candied Bacon Maple, and Key Lime Pie. My boys each got a hot cocoa, and I ordered a Smokey Robinson Chai. This had rich cocoa, cinnamon, clove, and vanilla, with smoked Lapsang Souchong Assam. We found a table and after taking a lot of photos, we all dug into the doughnuts. These were soft, warm, sweet, and the toppings really shined. My husband and I both loved the Candied Bacon Maple ones, and our boys really liked the Nutella doughnuts. The Key Lime Pie ones were good, too, but probably our third favorite of the three.

Before we knew it, our plate was empty. Our drinks were on the hot side for sipping, but I did enjoy the smokey flavor of my Chai. These drinks were perfect for the chilly winter day in Portland. There's a reason why locals and visitors alike adore this spot. The doughnuts and chai are made with love and care you can taste in every bite and sip.
