Southern-Inspired Dining at Screen Door in Portland

Screen Door's famous buttermilk-battered, crispy fried chicken breast, on a sweet potato waffle.

Screen Door in Portland's Pearl District is one of the city's best spots to eat. They serve Southern-inspired cuisine with an upscale vibe, and they've been open since 2006. I started with a Hurricane cocktail. This classic southern drink is something you'd find in New Orleans and has dark and light spiced rum with fresh fruit.

They're famous for their Chicken and Waffles, and you can choose from one piece of fried chicken to three, all stacked perfectly on a homemade sweet potato waffle with a side of syrup. We got two orders of the Chicken and Waffles to all share, with two pieces of chicken on each order. The chicken was super juicy, and the buttermilk-batter was nice and crispy. The waffle was nothing special, just a solid base to hold that tasty chicken.

Screen Door gets busy, so I'd recommend making a reservation like we did. They have another location on the Eastside of Portland, but its currently closed for a refurb. I'd been hearing about this restaurant for a while, every time I researched where to dine in Portland. I'm glad we finally got to try it!
