Two flavors of fruity buns and rolls at
Ceres Bakery in Kalispell. We tried the Huckleberry one and it was fantastic!
On my recent visit to Montana to visit my family, I tried so many huckleberry items! Huckleberries are one of the area's best food items and are definitely worth trying any kind of item you can. In mid to late August, the berries are ripe and ready to pick, but you can find huckleberry treats year around of course! Huckleberries are the perfect mix of sweet and tart and I have so many memories as a kid picking them and enjoying them in pie topped with ice cream.
On the way to my hometown where I grew up, we always stop in St. Regis for a pit stop. This gas station has a huge gift shop, a cafe, and lots of convenience store items for a quick lunch on the go. This time I purchased some Huckleberry Fudge. This sweet confection was so creamy and a little bit tart!
On the second day in MT, I went with my mom, sister-in-law, aunt, and some friends to have a girl's night in Bigfork. We went to the Bigfork Summer Playhouse to watch Mean Girls, and we also had dinner at
Split Rock Restaurant. Here I tried two huckleberry items- a Margarita and a really tasty burger with goat cheese, bacon, and local huckleberry jam. My mom and I split it, and it was still a large portion. A few of the other ladies also ordered the burger and it was a fan favorite among us.
The Huckleberry Margarita was the best huckleberry cocktail I've tried, and I've sampled quite a few over the years visiting MT. The tequila and huckleberry mixture was such a good combo. After our server brought me the drink, my friend immediately also wanted to order one.
One morning my mom baked some huckleberry muffins for us. Huckleberry pastries for breakfast are always a hit with us!
We went to Glacier National Park for late afternoon and evening, and we ate dinner in West Glacier at
Frieda's. This used to be the West Glacier Cafe and was actually my first job as a teen. Back then it was a sit-down restaurant with a decent menu featuring steak and more. Now this is a quick-service location catering to visitors after a busy park day. The food quality isn't very good and the prices were high. But we did get some Peach-Huckleberry Pie that did hit the spot. The pasty was decent but not as good as my mom's.
On our last night in MT, we ate at
Gunsight Saloon in Columbia Falls. My husband and I like to eat here at least once every time we visit. The vibes are top notch, along with the two full bars and the live outdoor music. But the food also always hits, too, most importantly. Along with some cocktails and a yummy Tuna Poke Tostada, we also split some Chicken Wings with some really good Huckleberry BBQ sauce. These were some of the best wings I've tried. The sauce added that perfect level of sweetness. These were super messy, but worth it!
I had heard about a lovely French bakery in Kalispell that the locals line up for and I wanted to visit. Ceres Bakery has authentic and buttery pastries and desserts. I felt transported to France upon walking in and it was hard to choose what treat to buy. I finally decided on a Huckleberry Bun. It was so flaky and buttery, it wasn't even funny. The huckleberry icing on top added a nice sweetness to the pasty.
In Whitefish, I spotted a new soft serve spot located in downtown. Snowghost Alpine Ice Cream has a variety of flavors and toppings. I tried some Huckleberry with chocolate sprinkles. It looked amazing, but the flavor was too subtle and plain for me.
The last item I tried was not in MT, but in Wallace, Idaho on our way home to Seattle. This was a quick bathroom stop at a gas station, and they happened to have sell hand-scooped ice cream. It didn't look like anything special, but I saw they had Huckleberry, and I was craving something sweet after being in the car for a while, so I ordered a scoop. It ended up being two scoops though and it blew me away in terms of flavor and texture. Really good ice cream from an unassuming spot in Idaho! I'm not trying on gatekeep, but I don't remember the name of the gas station.
These are all of the huckleberry items I tried during our trip! I tried a lot of things, and they were all mostly delicious. Have you tried any Huckleberry items before? What is your favorite way to eat these sweet and tart berries?
