Sugar Skull Cookies for Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
When I saw the Sugar Skull cookie dough at the grocery store, I knew I needed to make these viral cookies for Day of the Dead.
What's better than one cookie? Two cookies! You've probably seen these kinds of cookies before using chocolate chip cookie dough and then topping it with sugar cookie dough. These cookies were viral for a while online, and you can use any sugar cookie dough for any holiday. These sugar cookies usually sell out quickly at the store, so if you see them, buy some!
With Day of the Dead being on November 1st and 2nd this year, I thought I'd make some Sugar Skull cookies. Dia De Los Muertos is a two-day holiday that reunites the living and the dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their family members who have passed away. The alters are decorated with yellow marigold flowers, pictures, favorite food and drinks those who have passed, and more. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the souls hear their prayers, smell the food, and join in in the celebration. If you've seen the Disney movie Coco, you'll know about this annual celebration. To be honest, I didn't know anything about the Day of the Dead until I saw Coco. The soundtrack alone is worth a watch!
The Sugar Skull is used for this holiday to celebrate and honor loved ones. They show the sweetness of life and are meant to be festive, not morbid.
It's simple to bake these cookies. They take two ingredients, the chocolate chip cookie dough and the sugar cookie dough. You can purchase both at the grocery store. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Cover a baking pan in parchment paper. Break apart the chocolate chip cookie dough and line up on the baking sheet. Bake for five minutes. Now you'll add the sugar cookie dough to each cookie. Press down a small amount onto each one. Bake for fourteen minutes. Let cookies cool for several minutes. Using a spatula, move cookies to a container for storing.
You can buy these sugar cookies for any holiday. This is the first time I made them with chocolate chip cookie dough, and I loved how they tasted. I tried a cookie right out the oven after they cooled, and wow!
