A Seattle Ballooning Event at Seattle Center

Six 100-feet tall Hot Air Balloons at Seattle Center!

Last night was the summer solstice, and we celebrated by watching hot air balloons get inflated at Seattle Center! Seattle Ballooning is a local hot air balloon company, and they put on a free event where they inflated six balloons so the public could watch them all lit up in the night sky. The event was sponsored by Muckleshoot Casino, which is why the bright red one had the casino's name. The event was packed and they estimated around 1,500 people showed up to watch.

My sons and I decided to ride the bus downtown and then take the Seattle Monorail to Seattle Center and then grab a spot to watch the balloons. The Armory was packed with soccer fans watching the World Cup on a giant screen, and one of the teams scored a point, and everyone was on their feet, cheering. The energy and vibes were so electric! Then my sons played at the playground for a while before we found some spots for the event.

They started inflating the balloons at 9pm and they stayed lit and inflated until 10. They didn't go up in the sky but instead stayed on the ground. We waited for an hour with the large crowd, and you couldn't really move because of all of the people. When the balloons started inflating, the crowds started cheering and almost everyone had either a phone or camera capturing it all! The photographer in me was having a magical time!

I took way too many photos on my phone, but I edited them down to about 20 photos. It was so cool seeing the colorful balloons against the slowly darkening sky, especially as the flames in the baskets kept flickering on and off! The Space Needle was in the background, which made a cool looking background. I love the dark blue sky after the sun sets! Everyone was taking photos of the Space Needle while the sun was setting because of how neat the sun's reflection looked on it.

This was such an awesome event to experience. And a fun way to celebrate the longest day of the year!
