Mother's Day Weekend Brunch at The Garrison

Two mouthwatering brunch dishes from The Garrison in Ballard.  For Mother's Day weekend, my family and I dined at The Garrison . This is a locally owned Oyster and Seafood house located in Ballard. I started with a Sunset Espresso Martini. This had Amaro, Licor 43, Cold Brew, and Boomsma Herbal. I didn't really enjoy their version of the drink, and I should have known by reading the ingredients it would be different than the classic cocktail made with espresso. Unfortunately, we didn't really care for my husband's drink, an Almond Croissant Sidecar either. This had a bunch of ingredients and featured Cognac, but we didn't find it very tasty. He did however order a Manhattan later in the meal, and this classic martini was much better.  My sons shared the Chicken and Waffles. This was a pretty standard version of the classic brunch dish. It was made with Cornmeal Waffles and came with hot sauce, syrup, and honey butter. The chicken was seasoned nicely and was nice a...

Lunch at Rogue Ales Public House in Astoria

Drool- worthy cheese curds with Jalapeno Jelly for dipping. Bam!

When in Oregon, you drink beer. Beer is part of the culture and many are made right there in Oregon. Astoria is full of breweries and Public Houses and we've visited many of them over the years. On our latest visit we had lunch at Rogue Ales and Public House. This location is right next to Coffee Girl, inside the old cannery on the pier. It was an adventure driving on the rickety and narrow pier, but we made it.

The views of the Colombia River would have been pretty. But during our lunch, the rain came down so hard it pounded on the roof the whole time and blocked the views. But that's okay, because there was beer and cheese curds. I'm not big into beer, so when I visited brewpubs, I always look for a fruity beer. This time I chose the Fruit Salad Cider. It had cherries, marionberries, and plums, all grown on Rogue Farms. The cider also had apples, pears, peaches, and apricots, grown on Oregon soil. So if that's not fruity and local, I don't know what is. My husband enjoyed a light Logger beer and a shot of Whiskey.

For food, we went with the Soft Pretzels with a Dijon mustard for dipping, Cheese Curds with an amazing Jalapeno Jelly and a side of Ranch, and the Buffalo Chicken Sliders with fries. My husband ordered the Salmon Sandwich. The chicken sliders weren't my favorite since the chicken were presented in large cubes. I prefer shredded chicken or thin pieces of chicken. The pretzels were a funny shape and looked like fish tails or something, we couldn't figure it out. We all really enjoyed the cheese curds, because who wouldn't? All in all, it was a fun experience to eat on a pier and have some local Oregon beer. Yay, it rhymes!
