Mother's Day Weekend Brunch at The Garrison

Two mouthwatering brunch dishes from The Garrison in Ballard.  For Mother's Day weekend, my family and I dined at The Garrison . This is a locally owned Oyster and Seafood house located in Ballard. I started with a Sunset Espresso Martini. This had Amaro, Licor 43, Cold Brew, and Boomsma Herbal. I didn't really enjoy their version of the drink, and I should have known by reading the ingredients it would be different than the classic cocktail made with espresso. Unfortunately, we didn't really care for my husband's drink, an Almond Croissant Sidecar either. This had a bunch of ingredients and featured Cognac, but we didn't find it very tasty. He did however order a Manhattan later in the meal, and this classic martini was much better.  My sons shared the Chicken and Waffles. This was a pretty standard version of the classic brunch dish. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Mt. Vernon, WA

Yesterday we drove to Mt. Vernon to visit the lovely tulips which bloom from April 1st to the 30th.  I think everyone else in the Seattle area had the same idea because the traffic was at a stand still the whole drive there.  Mt. Vernon is about seventy miles north of Seattle.  What was supposed to be an hour and a half drive took almost three hours.  Having never been to the Tulip Festival, we didn't know what to expect and we felt silly for spending so much time in the car to just see some flowers.  But oh, we were blown away when we first spotted the colorful and blooming tulips.  As far as the eye could see, the tulips bloomed in the distance.  I loved all the colors, from red to purple and pink, these tulips were worth seeing and worth the drive from Seattle.

For more information about the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival go to http://www.tulipfestival.org.  Remember, every April this place is packed with people checking out over 300 acres of tulips.  So take your time and leave early in the morning for less crowds.
