A Date Night at Inside Passage

A Kiki's Premier Mai Tai from Inside Passage.

Nestled inside Rumba in Seattle's Capitol Hill is the speakeasy Inside Passage. Inspired by the beauty of the PNW, this bar has a sea theme, and you'll feel instantly transported. Upon entering, you can't miss Kiki, the giant octopus that graces the ceiling. The space isn't huge, and reservations are highly recommended in advance. They serve cocktails served in custom mugs with island spices, rare rums, and unique ingredients. There are two cocktail sections with oversized drinks in handmade and ornate cups made by a local ceramist. Then there's the Tropical Classics menu listing Mai Tai's and Daiquiris. If you want something to snack on, there's a food menu as well.

I decided on the Chi Chi drink from the Tropical Classics menu.  It was served in a large, gold pineapple cup and the cocktail had vodka, coconut cream, and fresh pineapple. The cup was heavy, had a lot of pebbled ice, but there was a good amount of drink inside, and it was strong. The flavor was delicious, and I loved the coconut cream. My husband ordered the Blue Hawaiian. The classic blue drink had vodka, pineapple rum, Blue Curacao, fresh pineapple, and lime. He really liked this cocktail and has ordered this classic drink before.

To eat, we ordered the Papaya Salad Coconut Shrimp and the Brie Wontons. We weren't blown away by the food, although the salad tasted really fresh and light. The wontons were on the chewy side, and I wouldn't recommend ordering them. The salad was different than other Papaya Salad versions we've eaten at restaurants and have made at home.

We decided to share another cocktail to share from the Tropical Classics list. We ordered a Kiki's Premier Mai Tai. This drink didn't taste like the usual Mai Tai and had a more oaky flavor. The rum tasted more unique with a stronger finish. This had House barrel-aged Rivers Royale, Appleton Estate 15, Chairman's Reserve 1931, Rhem JM Terroir, Volcanique, Saint James 110, curacao, creole shrubb, orgeat, and lime. That is a lot of ingredients! It didn't taste that complex and was really tasty.

We enjoyed our time with Kiki the octopus and the neat sea and boat theme in this unique Capitol Hill speakeasy!
