Trying a Banana Pudding Matcha Latte at Phe
The signature Banana Pudding Matcha Latte from Phe.
What started as a matcha and Vietnamese coffee pop-up in the Chinatown-International District in 2022, is now a brick-and-mortar on Capitol Hill. Phe opened in May and is still drawing lines with people wanting to try their specialty matcha and Viet coffee drinks. Phe offers unique topping such as the one I tried, Banana Pudding with nuts and toffee bits.
When we visited, there were just a few people ahead of us in line inside. I ordered my drink and we grabbed a table. It didn't take long for them to make my drink. The drink was a pretty green and topped with the delicious banana pudding with a spoon. We each tried a few bites of the pudding before mixing it with the drink. It was joy in a cup! I wish they sold the banana pudding with the nuts and toffee in a separate cup. I would order one of those and get it on my drink. We mixed everything together and it tasted so good! The matcha was a little bitter like expected, but the sweetness of the banana pudding made it nice and sweet.
The prices for the drinks at Phe are on the pricier side, with a large matcha latte being $12 with taxes, and I tipped $2. Splitting a drink with my husband was the move. Even though I shared the drink, I still got a nice caffeine buzz. Matcha has about as much caffeine as one cup of coffee. If you've never had Matcha, it's finely ground green tea, whisked with hot water and added to a frothy drink. It has antioxidants and caffeine, and not everybody loves the flavor. Most people, me included, like to add toppings, milk, and sweeteners to the drink. And they do a great job of this at Phe with their signature toppings!
