Dinner at Vij's for Indian food in Vancouver

Some mouthwatering Indian dishes from Vij's.

For a dinner out in Vancouver, BC we dined at Vij's. They've been open since 1994 and have received many accolades and awards over the years. We had a reservation, which I'm glad we had, since the restaurant was busy. The hostess led us to what she referred to as the best seat in the house, a corner table by windows where the sunlight streamed in.

We were given some complimentary bites and hot Chai to drink. The flavors stimulated our appetites as we looked over the menu. The cocktail menu was full of signature options. I selected an Up in Smoke. This cocktail had Oaxacan Mezcal, Aperol, Lemon, Passionfruit, and Smoked Saffron Salt. This pretty pink drink tasted tropical and smokey. My husband chose The Dark Army drink. This one had Lemon Hart Demerara Rum, Citrus, Ketal One Grapefruit Vodka, Odd Society Mia Amata Amaro and Soda. This one also tasted tropical and was a well-balanced drink. Our son got a really refreshing Mango Lassi drink.

We ordered some dishes to share. At Vij's all of the dishes are served family style and brought out together. We got the Potato and Bell Pepper Samosa which had a tomato-coconut Masala sauce.  The Samosa with big and came one to an order. It had a nice fried coating and tasted delicious. We also got the Lamb Lollipops which came three to an order. These were wine-marinated and came with a fenugreek cream curry on turmeric and spinach potatoes. The lamb was tender and full of flavor. We also really enjoyed the sauce.

My husband ordered the Lamb in garam masala curry with sauteed zucchini and roasted okra. He liked the tender pieces of lamb and the spices in the sauce. The entrees come with Basmati rice and Naan. The Naan was nice and fluffy and perfect for scooping up the sauces.

All three dishes were a little spicey, but nothing crazy. We enjoyed all of the flavors of everything we ate. We don't have a lot of experience with Indian food, having only gone out for it a few times. The food we tried seemed pretty standard to what we've eaten in the past. We enjoyed the service and the hospitality at Vij's and the owner came by our table several times to check on us. This seems like a spot where the locals go. Some friends recommended we eat there and I'm so glad we did!

Some complimentary bites to get our dinner started.

Our server also gave us each a cup of warm Chai to sip.

Cheers to dinner at Vij's!

My husband's The Dark Army cocktail.

And my Up in Smoke drink.

The very tasty Lamb Lollipops.

The Lamb dish with garum masala curry.

Our Samosa, from the appetizer menu. So good.

The yummy Naan. My son's love bread, so they ate most of the Naan!

The busy dining room at Vij's. We sat upstairs, and the bar and more seating in downstairs.
